Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie is a distinguished Sierra Leonean academic, researcher, and policymaker whose professional journey has been defined by visionary leadership, innovation, and a deep commitment to national development through education and health systems strengthening. Trained in Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, she earned academic qualifications from institutions including the University of Liverpool, the University of Wolverhampton, Warwick Medical School, and the University of Leeds. Over more than a decade at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), University of Sierra Leone, she served as a Senior Lecturer and researcher, leading groundbreaking work focused on health workforce development, health systems resilience, and evidence-based policymaking. Her contributions during and after the Ebola epidemic earned her international recognition as a respected global health systems expert and advocate for resilient public institutions. Dr. Wurie is also a Fellow of the prestigious Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Programme, which recognizes emerging African leaders shaping the future of health and governance across the continent.
As Sierra Leone’s Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Wurie has emerged as a transformative and empathetic leader, championing reforms aimed at modernizing the country’s tertiary and technical education landscape. Known for her people-centered and collaborative leadership style, she has positioned technical and higher education as a critical driver of youth empowerment, innovation, entrepreneurship, and national competitiveness. Under her leadership, the Ministry has prioritized quality assurance reforms, digital transformation within higher education institutions, expansion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), international partnerships, research development, and stronger alignment between education and labor market needs. She has also been a strong advocate for lifelong learning, skills development, and inclusive access to higher education, particularly for women and young people.
