On 14 February 2020, the Minister of Health and Population of Egypt, Dr Hala Zayed, confirmed the first case of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Egypt.
In her statement, she confirmed that the patient is male, 33 years old, of foreign origin and is currently receiving treatment at an isolation centre in Egypt. The 17 contacts of the patient have tested negative, and all of them are under home isolation for 14 days. They are being followed up by the Ministry of Health and Population.
We are confident that Egypt has the expertise to manage the situation. Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is communicating with officials in Egypt and the World Health Organization Office for the Eastern Mediterranean Region to coordinate support for Egypt in responding to this outbreak.
Africa CDC is working closely with the WHO and other partners to ensure that the diagnostic tools needed by Egypt are available and that they take the right actions to contain the outbreak as quickly as possible.
As I have said before, we anticipated that the COVID-19 outbreak would inevitably impact Africa. That is why Africa CDC has been working actively with African Union Member States and partners in the past four weeks and investing in preparedness and response to the disease. This detection by Egyptian authorities is evidence of the strategy that Africa CDC and Member States have adopted in combating the disease.
Last week, in Dakar, Senegal, we conducted training and supplied test kits to 16 African laboratories, including from Egypt. Egypt also received additional test kits from the WHO.
This week, we are conducting training in Nairobi, Kenya, for 40 participants from nine countries, including Egypt, on enhancing detection and investigation of COVID-19 at points-of-entry. The training is co-facilitated by Africa CDC, WHO, and the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO). Two airlines, Kenya Airways and South African Airlines, are also represented in the training.
In the next two weeks, further training and resources will be provided to Egypt and other at-risk countries for infection prevention and control in healthcare facilities, medical management of COVID-19, and risk communication and community engagement.

IDENTIFICATION DU PREMIER CAS DE LA MALADIE A CORONAVIRUS EN AFRIQUE : DECLARATION DU DIRECTEUR D’AFRICA CDC
Le 14 février 2020, Dr Hala Zayed, Ministre égyptien de la Santé et de la Population, a confirmé le premier cas de la maladie à coronavirus (COVID-19) en Égypte.
Dans sa déclaration, elle a confirmé que le patient est un homme âgé de 33 ans, d’origine étrangère, actuellement traité dans un centre d’isolement en Égypte. Les 17 contacts du patient ont été testés négatifs, et tous ont été placé sous isolement à domicile depuis 14 jours. Ils font l’objet d’un suivi par le Ministère de la Santé et de la Population.
Nous sommes convaincus que l’Égypte possède l’expertise nécessaire pour gérer la situation. Les Centres africains de contrôle et de prévention des maladies (Africa CDC) sont en communication avec les autorités égyptiennes et le Bureau de l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé pour la région de la Méditerranée orientale afin de coordonner l’aide apportée à l’Égypte pour faire face à cette épidémie.
AFRICA CDC travaille en étroite collaboration avec l’OMS et d’autres partenaires pour s’assurer que les outils diagnostiques nécessaires à l’Égypte soient disponibles et que les mesures adéquates soient prises pour contenir l’épidémie le plus rapidement possible.
Comme je l’ai déjà dit, nous avions prévu que l’épidémie de COVID-19 aurait inévitablement des répercussions sur l’Afrique. C’est pourquoi AFRICA CDC a travaillé activement avec les États membres et les partenaires de l’Union africaine au cours des quatre dernières semaines et s’est investi dans la préparation et la réponse à la maladie. Cette détection par les autorités égyptiennes est la preuve de la stratégie adoptée par AFRICA CDC et les États membres de l’UA pour lutter contre la maladie.
La semaine dernière, à Dakar, au Sénégal, nous avons organisé une formation et fourni des kits de test à 16 laboratoires africains, y compris d’Égypte qui a également reçu des kits de test supplémentaires de l’OMS.
Cette semaine, nous organisons une formation à Nairobi, au Kenya, pour 40 participants issus de neuf pays, dont l’Égypte, sur l’amélioration de la détection et de l’investigation de la COVID-19 aux points d’entrée. Cette formation est co-animée par AFRICA CDC, l’OMS et l’Autorité de l’aviation civile internationale (OACI). Deux compagnies aériennes, Kenya Airways et South African Airlines, sont également représentées dans la formation.
Au cours des deux prochaines semaines, une formation et des ressources supplémentaires seront fournies à l’Égypte et à d’autres pays à risque pour la prévention et le contrôle des infections dans les formations sanitaires, la gestion médicale de COVID-19, la communication des risques et l’engagement communautaire.
