Exit Screening Critical to Stopping Ebola Spread, Africa CDC Warns
As the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak continues to spread, the Africa CDC has urged African Union Member States to immediately strengthen exit screening and public health measures at airports, seaports and major land border crossings to reduce the risk of cross-border transmission.
In a letter to Ministers of Health, Africa CDC Director-General Dr Jean Kaseya called for coordinated, science-based action to detect potential cases early while keeping travel, trade and humanitarian operations moving safely. Recommended measures include enhanced traveller screening, stronger referral systems, improved risk communication and closer coordination among border health authorities.
The guidance stresses that enhanced screening is not a travel restriction, but a practical tool to contain the outbreak at its source, protect communities and maintain international confidence. Africa CDC, the WHO and partners have pledged continued support as African leaders prepare to meet on 16 June to mobilise the political commitment and resources needed to accelerate containment efforts.
