The ongoing Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda highlights a major gap in global epidemic preparedness. There are currently no licensed vaccines or treatments for this Ebola strain exposing long-standing inequalities in global health research, particularly for diseases affecting low-income countries often receive insufficient funding until crises occur.
Despite the lack of vaccines and therapeutics, health experts from Africa CDC argue that, Ebola can still be controlled through strong public health measures, including rapid case detection, isolation, contact tracing, infection prevention and control, safe burials, and community engagement.
