ABOUT THE EVENT: Curbing the pandemic while protecting access to essential health services requires an ample supply of vaccine, a functioning, well-funded delivery system, and careful planning. With strained budgets and supply shortages, policymakers face new challenges to set priorities and allocate limited resources effectively amid the COVID-19 crisis. The Africa Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) have been instrumental to supporting African countries in their COVID-19 response.
The Health Economics Unit (HEU) at the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) was launched in collaboration with the Center for Global Development (CGD) to facilitate evidence-based priority-setting during the pandemic and beyond. As COVID-19 cases on the African continent climb over 8.5 million and vaccination rates remain low (4.6 percent of the population), the HEU’s flagship project will devise an equitable, efficient, and effective vaccine roll out.
Join the Africa CDC, CGD and the African Health Economics Association for the first public event with the HEU – a virtual discussion on the role of modelling and economic evidence to inform COVID-19 vaccine procurement and distribution strategies. Policymakers and researchers will discuss methods for meeting the African Union’s goal of vaccinating 60 percent of the continent’s population, balancing economic and epidemiological priorities, and learning from Africa’s COVID-19 response to date.
