Africa CDC and AFF Scale Up Drive for 200,000 Community Health Workers
A new agreement between Africa CDC and Africa Frontline First (AFF) – a coalition of governments, donors and partners supporting community health systems – is set to accelerate the deployment of 200,000 community health workers across the continent.
Signed on the sidelines of the World Health Summit Regional Meeting in Nairobi by Africa CDC Director General Dr Jean Kaseya and AFF Co-Executive Director Nan Chen, the partnership reflects a growing push to institutionalise community health within national systems.
Building on progress between 2023 and 2025, the partnership has helped mobilise significant financing, supported the deployment of over 100,000 community health workers, and strengthened digital and surveillance systems – shifting efforts from fragmented interventions to more integrated, system-driven approaches.
The 2026 to 2028 phase will focus on scaling deployment, strengthening domestic financing, professionalising the workforce and integrating community health into pandemic preparedness and response.
