COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | OVERVIEW
- As of today, 13th October 2022, African Union Member States are reporting the following:
- Total cases: Over 12 million COVID-19 cases have been reported in Africa, (12,080,397). This accounts for 2% of total cases reported globally.
- Total recoveries: Over 11.4 million people have recovered (11,447,252). This accounts for 95% of the total cases reported in Africa.
- Total deaths: Over 255 thousand deaths have been reported (255,846). This results ina cumulative case fatality rate (CFR) of 2.1%,and accounts for 4.1% of deaths reported globally. Higher than global CFR average of 1.1%.
- The following five countries account for 60% of all cases reported in Africa.
- South Africa: 33% of total cases (4,021,746)
- Morocco: 10% of total cases (1,265,138)
- Tunisia: 9% of total cases (1,145,930)
- Egypt: 4% of total cases (515,667)
- Libya: 4% of total cases (507,010)
COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | ONE-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS
- The following are trends for epidemiological week 40 (3 – 9 October 2022), compared to the previous epidemiological week 39 (26 September – 2 October 2022):
- New cases: A total of 6,279 new cases were reported in Africa. This is a 15% increase from the previous week.
- The highest proportion of new cases is from the Southern region (42%). The other regions are as follows:
- Central region (23%)
- Western region (22%)
- Eastern region (7%)
- Northern region (6%)
- The following 5 countries are reporting the highest number of new cases:
- South Africa (2,175)
- Cameroon (1,072)
- Nigeria (434)
- Ghana (418)
- Zimbabwe (211)
- New deaths: A total of 21 new deaths were reported in Africa. This is a 60% decrease from the previous week.
COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | FOUR-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS
- The following are trends over the past 4 epidemiological weeks, (12 September – 9 October 2022):
- New cases: There has been an overall 10% average increase in new cases reported in Africa over the last 4 weeks. Increases in Eastern, Central and Southern Regions, with decreases in Northern and Western regions.
- New deaths: There has been an overall 2% average increase in new deaths reported in Africa each week. Increases in Northern, Southern and Western, with a decrease in Eastern and no change in Central.
COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE
- With regards to the current progress of vaccinations across the continent – as 12 October 2022, African Union Member States are reporting the following:
- Total vaccine doses supplied: 997 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been procured by 54 Member States.
- Total vaccine doses administered: 717 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered, which corresponds to 72% of the total supply available in Africa.
- Coverage: 23.2% of the total population (2022) has been fully vaccinated (primary series) on the continent.

TREND ANALYSIS – COVID19 VACCINATION
- In The following are trends for epidemiological week 40 (3 October – 9 October 2022), compared to the previous epidemiological week 39 (26 September – 2 October 2022):
- The following 15 countries have indicated a ≥ 25% increase in vaccination rate
- Burundi, CAR, Chad, Comoros, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, DRC, Madagascar, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Mali, Somalia, Zambia
- Contributing factors include: Targeted door to door campaign (Tanzania), Ongoing mass vaccination campaign (Zambia, DRC, Cameroon)
- The following 7 countries have indicated a ≤ -25% decrease in vaccination rate
- Ghana, Morocco, South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Libya, Tunisia
- This can be attributed to biweekly reporting (Morocco, Libya, Tunisia)
- Challenges
- Despite recent increase in number of persons vaccinated, Competing priorities including response to outbreaks – Polio, Yellow Fever, Measles, Cholera.
- Recommendations include
- Integrate COVID-19 vaccinations with other interventions
- Improve data management processes
- Improving access through mass/ door-to-door campaigns
- Target the younger population during mass campaigns

ANNOUNCEMENTS
- From 4 – 6 October 2022 in Cotonou, Benin, Media professionals from public broadcasting entities in the West African region have been trained on strategies to fight infodemic & proper use of health data in reporting.
- On 10 October 2022, Africa CDC and the AUC commemorated the World Mental Health Day under the theme “Make Mental Health a global priority for all”. Tough work environment for emergency response – strengthening psychosocial support for staff.
- On 12th October 2022, the Government of Uganda hosted a high-level emergency ministerial meeting on Cross-border emergency preparedness and response to improve Africa’s health security. Entebbe, Uganda. Communique to be released shortly – key agreements:
- Set up Africa Ebola Coordination Taskforce (AfECT);
- Develop a Framework for collaboration and coordination on cross-border emergencies; and
- Follow up ministerial meeting to assess progress in late November 2022.
- On 11 – 13 October 2022, Africa CDC hosted a High-level Meeting on Community Health in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. To advocate for the transformation of community health declarations and high-level decisions into action and call for political and financial commitment in strengthening community health workforce and systems towards achieving Health Equity in Africa.

SLL updates – October 13, 2022
- Overview:
- Of the 49 Member States engaged with the Saving Lives and Livelihoods (SLL) Programme, 11 Member States have begun implementation. These include Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Namibia, Lesotho, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Tanzania, and more recently, Botswana and Malawi.
- In the following weeks, implementation will begin in seven additional countries: Congo Brazzaville, Gabon. Burundi, Togo, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde
- Updates on MS in implementation and reporting data:
- Of the nine Member States in implementation, Seven Member States are currently reporting data on DHIS2, as the dashboard indicates. These are Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Lesotho, DRC, Tanzania and Zambia. Between the start of implementation in June and week 40 (last week, the following number of SLL-supported vaccine doses have been administered in the respective countries:
Ethiopia: ~583K in 18 weeks
Kenya: ~552K in 12 weeks
Namibia: ~22K in 8 weeks[1]
Lesotho: ~49K in 7 weeks
Rwanda: ~31K in 6 weeks*
DRC: ~8K in 3 weeks11
Tanzania: ~ 219K in 1 week
Zambia: ~ 1.5K in 1 week
- For the last reporting week (that is, week 40), as shown on the dashboard, data on the number of Vx doses administered has only been submitted for Kenya, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Tanzania and Zambia.
- Kenya: In Kenya Vx doses administered in weeks 40 has decreased sharply whereby ~7k doses were administered in week 40 compared to ~123k in week 39. Challenges sited include stock out of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, intensification of drought whereby population prioritizing receival of food and pause in implementation by health workers ahead of upcoming mass campaign.
- Ethiopia: The number of vaccine doses administeredin week 40, (~11k), increased compared to the previous week (~35k). This is explained by vaccine campaign conducted in Kolfe Zone, Addis Ababa. The fourth round of mass campaign in Ethiopia is delayed due to availability of funds from Gavi to support operational costs.
- Lesotho: Encouragingly, Lesotho has administered a total of > 11k Vx doses (number of Vx doses administered both in weeks 39 and 40)
- Tanzania: Tanzania started uploading data this week, more than 219K Vx doses have been administered in week 40. Implementation is ongoing in 7 out of 10 regions being supported by the program.
- Zambia: In Zambia1.5K Vx doses have been administered in WK40.
Next steps:
- Focus remains to begin implementation in Congo Brazzaville, Gabon. Burundi, Togo, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde although challenges with availability of funds for the Western Africa Region is not yet resolved
- Close follow up and capacity building for implementing partners to upload their data on DHIS2

Other information | Recent studies published by the US CDC have revealed that the prevalence of HIV is high among monkeypox positive cases. In addition, unvaccinated persons had 14 times the risk of being infected with monkeypox than unvaccinated persons.There is therefore the need for all stakeholders and partners to mobilize vaccines and create equitable access to ensure high risk groups including health care workers are vaccinated against the virus.
