Talking Points, Weekly Press Briefing on COVID-19 in Africa, 11th August 2022

COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | OVERVIEW

As of today, August 11th, African Union Member States are reporting the following:

  • Total cases: Over 12 million COVID-19 cases have been reported in Africa, (12,008,995). This accounts for 3% of total cases reported globally.
  • Total recoveries: Over 11.3 million people have recovered (11,396,247). This accounts for 95% of the total cases reported in Africa.
  • Total deaths: Over 255 thousand deaths have been reported (255,232). This results ina cumulative case fatality rate (CFR) of 2.2%,and accounts for 4.1% of deaths reported globally.
  • The following five countries account for 61% of all cases reported in Africa:
  • South Africa: 33% of total cases (4,004,555)
  • Morocco: 11% of total cases (1,262,887)
  • Tunisia: 9% of total cases (1,139,241)
  • Egypt: 4% of total cases (515,667)
  • Libya: 4% of total cases (505,956)\
  • Case Fatality Rate (CFR): this week, 41 countries (75% of Member States), are reporting a CFR higher than the global average of 1.1%.
  • 2 countries (Somalia and Sudan) are reporting a CFR higher than 5%.
  • Since the last briefing, NO additional Member State  is  experiencing a 5th wave.
  • Since the last briefing, NO additional Member State IS experiencing a 6th wave.

COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | VARIANTS OF CONCERN (VOC)

  • No change on MS reporting:

● The Alpha (B.1.1.7) VOC (50MS)

  • The Beta (B.1.351) VOC (45 MS)
  • The Delta (B.1.617.2) VOC (52 MS)
  • The Gamma (GR/501Y.V3/P.1+P.1.1+P.1.2) VOC[1] (3MS)
  • The Omicron BA.2 sub-lineage (26 MS)
  • 51 Member States are now reporting the Omicron GR/484A (B.1.1.529). Since the last briefing, ONE additional Member State (Somalia) is reporting this variant.

COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | ONE-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS

  • The following are trends for epidemiological week 31 (1 – 7 August 2022), compared to the previous epidemiological week 30 (25 – 31 July 2022):
  • New cases: A total of 14,044 new cases were reported in Africa. This is a 31% decrease from the previous week.
  • The highest proportion of new cases is from the Northern region (57%). The other regions are as follows:
  • Central region (12%)
  • Western region (12%)
  • Southern region (10%)
  • Eastern region (9%)
  • The following 5 countries are reporting the highest number of new cases:
  • Tunisia (4,581)
  • Morocco (1,644)
  • Burundi (1,487)
  • Libya (808)
  • Algeria (800)
  • The following 5 countries are reporting the highest daily incidence per million population, (average number of new cases per million population per day):
  • Seychelles (616)
  • Libya (16)
  • Burundi (17)
  • Cabo Verde (13)
  • The Gambia (9)
  • New deaths: A total of 99 new deaths were reported in Africa. This is a 40% decrease from the previous week.

COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | FOUR-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS

  • The following are trends over the past 4 epidemiological weeks, (11 July  – 7 August 2022):
  • New cases: There has been an overall 28% average decrease in new cases reported in Africa over the last 4 weeks.
  • The following is a regional breakdown:
  • 18% increase in the Central region
  • 31%decreasein the Northernregion
  • 28%decrease in theSouthernregion
  • 7%decrease in the Eastern region
  • 4% decreasein theWestern region
  • The following is a breakdown by the most populous countries in Africa:
  • Nigeria: 4% average increase
  • Kenya: 36% average decrease
  • Ethiopia: 28% average decrease
  • South Africa: 19% average decrease
  • DR Congo: 13% average decrease
  • Egypt: No change
  • New deaths: There has been an overall 16% average decrease in new deaths reported in Africa each week.
  • The following is a regional breakdown:
  • 21% increase in the Western region 
  • 6% increase in the Eastern region 
  • 24% decrease in the Southern region 
  • 13%decrease in the Central region 
  • 9% decrease in the Northern region
  • The following is a breakdown by the most populous countries in Africa:
  • Nigeria: 75% average decrease
  • Ethiopia: 43% average decrease
  • South Africa: 30% average decrease
  • DR Congo: 25% average decrease
  • Kenya: 19% average decrease
  • Egypt: No change

COVID-19 TESTING & MEDICAL SUPPLIES

  • To date, over 120 million COVID-19 tests (120,185,169) have been conducted in African Union Member States since the pandemic started.
  • Over 550 thousand new tests (550,274) were reported for epidemiological week 31 (1 – 7 August 2022).
  • This is a 37% increase from the previous week when 402,019 tests were reported.
  • For epidemiological week 31 (1 – 7 August 2022), the positivity rate is 3% and the test-per-case ratio is 39, which is a decrease (73%) in the positivity rate and an increase (99%) in the test-per-case ratio compared to the previous week, respectively.
  • 4% ofMember States (2 countries: Libya and Tunisia) are reporting a test positivity rate higher than 12% this week.

COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE

  • With regards to the current progress of vaccinations across the continent – as 10 August 2022, African Union Member States are reporting the following:
  • Total vaccine doses supplied: 925 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been procured by 54 Member States.
  • Total vaccine doses administered: 653 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered, which corresponds to 71% of the total supply available in Africa.
  • Coverage: 21.1% of the total population (2022) has been fully vaccinated on the continent.

AVAT Deliveries:

As at 7th of August, 74,033,500 J & J  doses has been delivered thus far to 35 African Member states and the African Union:

  • 48,777,600 through AU/J&J,
    • 17,899,200 through SLL, and
    • 7,356,700 through USG donations.

In the last one week, 151,200 doses of J&J have been delivered to Namibia.

The 35 member states are, Egypt, Rwanda, Angola, Kenya, Ghana, Tunisia, Libya, Zambia, Botswana, Mauritania, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe, Nigeria, Mozambique, Guinea, Gabon, Cameroon, Malawi, Ethiopia, Uganda,Togo, Sénégal, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia,Benin, Guinea Bissau, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo republic, DRC, Gambia,Lesotho, Madagascar, Namibia, Sudan.

  • Eritrea is the remaining AU Member States yet to start COVID-19 vaccine roll out.


Note:

Africa CDC has changed the denominator of the calculation for percentage fully vaccinated to from 2020 population to 2022 population estimates (UNFPA) to give accurate projections from effective population size (Ne) perspectives. The resulting effect is that there will be a slight reduction in Coverage percentages of total population of Member States on the continent.

[1] The new Pango lineage v4.0.6 (2022-04-24) tool being used by GISAID to assign lineage from last week has reclassified the previous sequences.
