Efficient public health laboratory systems and networks are essential for the successful detection, characterization and tracing of disease transmission. RISLNET is bringing together laboratory experts at the regional level to work together more closely, and to consult and share knowledge so they can support each other in developing a regional approach to preparedness and response to disease threats. This will ensure timely availability of laboratory evidence for confirmation of suspected pathogens during outbreaks, drug resistance, introduction of new vaccines, updating of existing vaccine compositions, and provision of guidelines and policies on treatment and prevention at the national and regional levels.
