Study Finds International Support Crucial in Outbreaks, Urges Stronger National Integration
A new study by Africa CDC and the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team confirms the vital role international health teams have played in supporting outbreak response across Africa, especially between 2020 and 2023. These teams provided critical surge capacity across multiple domains, from surveillance to clinical care. How ever, the study also highlights gaps in sustain ability and calls for deployments that are better integrated into national systems and aligned with local priorities.
Presented at a high-level workshop in June 2025, the findings led to a roadmap aimed at shifting from reactive emergency support to long-term investments in national preparedness. The report urges global health partners to tailor their support to country-specific contexts, thereby working to reduce Africa’s dependence on external teams while building resilient, self-sufficient health systems.
