Outbreak Brief 9: Monkeypox in Africa Union Member States

Global Update (non-endemic countries): As of 8 September 2022, 56,609 confirmed cases of monkeypox and 132 deaths were reported from 100 countries/territories globally. The countries reporting the majority of cases are mainly in Europe and North America.
Africa update (endemic and non-endemic countries): Since the last brief (31 August 2022), 695 new cases (37 confirmed; 658 suspected) and 17 new deaths (CFR: 2.4%) of monkeypox were reported from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Egypt and Nigeria. This is a 50% increase in the number of new confirmed cases since the last brief. Cumulatively, 4,244 cases (520 confirmed; 3,724 suspected) and 124 deaths (case fatality rate [CFR]: 2.9%) of monkeypox were reported from 11 African Union (AU) Member States (MS) since January 2022 (Table 1).
DRC: Since the last brief (31 August 2022), 558 new suspected cases and 17 new deaths (CFR: 3.0%) of monkeypox were reported in DRC. Cumulatively, 2,938 cases (163 confirmed; 2,775 suspected) and 110 deaths (CFR: 3.7) were reported from 128 health zones in 21 provinces of DRC.
Egypt: On 7 September 2022, Egypt Ministry of Health (MoH) reported a confirmed case of monkeypox. The case is a male aged 42 years old and reported a history of travel to Europe. This is the first case reported in Egypt.
Nigeria: Since the last brief (31 August 2022), the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 136 new cases (36 confirmed; 100 suspected) and no new deaths of monkeypox in Nigeria. This is a 71% increase in the number of new confirmed cases compared to the last report. Cumulatively, 981 cases (277 confirmed; 704 suspected) and six deaths (CFR: 0.6%) of monkeypox were reported from 34 states and the federal capital territory.
