“The African Union and the European Union have been at the forefront of the operationalisation
of digitalisation in health, as witnessed during the COVID-19 response. This included the
establishment of the EU Digital COVID Certificate (EUDCC), the support to the Traceability and
Verification System (TRVST) for COVID-19 vaccines, and other health products as well as the
African Union Trusted Travel Platform (TTP), supported by the multistakeholder AU-Koldchain
PanaBIOS framework and its complements such as the AfCFTA Hub and the AU-4D ProPer
Platform.
The European Commission and the African Union Commission are committed to pursuing
people-centred interoperability of the digital health ecosystem, building on the momentum
created around COVID-19 innovations, to ensure the acceleration of health system strengthening
and the achievement of Universal Health Coverage, bringing the health security and public
health modernisation agenda to the next level.
This joint effort is part of a broader collaboration on digital health between the African Union
Commission and the European Commission. Respective consultations of digital health strategies
and initiatives are ongoing, notably around the upcoming AU digital health strategy, the Africa
CDC digital transformation strategy as well as the Team Europe Initiative on digital health in
Africa.
As two key regional players globally, the African Union Commission and the European
Commission are determined to advance the digital health agenda”.
