Job Purpose

The Principal Technical Officer will serve as a principal advisor to the Head, Division of Disease Control and Prevention (DCP) at Africa CDC to strengthen public health security by providing technical support to ensure a robust disease response system is in place at Africa CDC. The support of the Principal Technical Officer should contribute to the design, planning and implementation of strategic actions to improve NCDs, Injuries and Mental health outcomes in Africa through supporting the overall implementation of the Africa CDC strategy on NCDs, Injuries and Mental Health including the Mental Health Leadership program among other important initiatives.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal Technical Officer shall perform the following major duties and responsibilities:

  • Support the Head of Division in the Implementation of Africa CDC NCDs, Injuries and Mental Health strategic priorities including capacity building of Member states to improve on NCDs, Injuries and Mental Health indicators on the African continent.
  • Provide scientific and technical leadership, coordination and managerial support to Africa CDC, the Regional Collaborating Centers (RCCs), National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs) and Ministries of Health to improve NCDs, Injuries and Mental Health prevention and control programs and contribute to the reducing mortality ratio from these conditions in Africa.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in capacity building, research, epidemiology, policy development and implementation in the area of NCDs, Injuries and Mental Health, Apply subject matter expertise and extensive writing expertise to the development of guidance and policy at the continental level,
  • Work closely with Member States through their NPHIs and the Regional Collaborating Centres (RCCs) in particular, in setting health priorities and strategic objectives and developing national plans, guidelines, and frameworks to improve Member States capacities in improving health outcomes.
  • Work closely with the African and global research community and provide support for knowledge generation and evidence sharing and its translation to policy, practice, and innovation.
  • Collect, analyze, and utilize data from health research and innovation to inform policy and decision-making at all levels of the healthcare system.
  • Provide technical input with regards to design, implementation, data analysis, report writing for public health, social and operational research, and policy briefs.
  • Ensure the monitoring and reporting of outputs, outcomes, lessons learned, and challenges for activities of the Division.
  • Build and maintain strong collaborations and relationships with partners interested in advancing the NCDs, Injuries and Mental Health Agenda on the continent.
  • Undertake any other duties/responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
