Executive Summary

Summary of major developments during the reporting period (e.g., significant outbreaks, policy changes, vaccination campaigns,
etc.).
• Africa CDC and WHO established a Technical Review Committee (TRC) as an access and allocation mechanism for mpox vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics.
• Nigeria was the first country to receive 10,000 doses of the JYNNEOS mpox vaccine in August 2024.
• On 5 September 2024, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) received the first batch of 200,000 JYNNEOS mpox vaccines supplied by European Union Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) through Africa CDC negotiations. In addition, 65,000 doses of JYNNEOS mpox vaccines received from the US government.
• Rwanda launched Africa’s first mpox vaccination campaign on 17 September 2024 and has vaccinated approximately 500 people.
• WHO deployed 36 international experts to three countries and repurposed 395 staff in the DRC (19 in Goma, 4 in Equateur, 8 in Sud Kivu, and 10 in Kinshasa) and 354 polio staff to support Member States in their mpox response efforts. Additionally, 19 staff were repurposed in Burundi.
• Africa CDC Director General had missions to Burundi and Morocco to strengthen Africa CDC’s coordination and leadership response to the mpox outbreak.
• Africa CDC, UNICEF, WHO had joint mission to Mbandaka (Equateur province) and South Kivu to identify technical support areas for the national response plan in Burundi.
